Members of the National Assembly Education Committee have raised concern over financial and structural challenges facing TVET institutions following an inspection visit to The Siaya National Polytechnic in Siaya County on Saturday, 12th April 2025.
Led by Committee Chairperson, Hon. Julius Melly, the lawmakers inspected ongoing infrastructure projects and engaged institutional heads in several National Polytechnics, who decried persistent underfunding, delayed capitation, and inadequate infrastructure.
During their visit at TSNP, The Chief Principal highlighted accommodation challenges and low parental financial support. “Most of our trainees come from needy backgrounds. Parents struggle to meet even basic expenses,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Randa acknowledged the accessibility of government support. “The National Government has streamlined funding facilities for TVETs, which is a huge opportunity for expanding access,” he added.
Hon. Melly affirmed the Committee’s commitment to champion policy and legislative reforms to address funding and capacity gaps. “These institutions are key to industrial growth. We need to ensure capitation is aligned with real costs and disbursed on time,” he said.
The Committee on Education called for increased support to ensure that National Polytechnics continue on their upward trajectory. “We need to prioritise funding and staffing for TVET institutions. This is where the future of employment lies,” said Hon. Julius Taitumu.
The Committee is expected to table a report with recommendations on funding models, infrastructure development, and alignment of TVET training with national development priorities.
