  • Provide technical advice on all construction matters in the institution.

Message to the public

The Building and Civil Engineering department was established in 1988, since then, enrolment of trainees has risen steadily to over 400 students in 2019. SIT is a TVET Institution of choice for pursuing Building, Civil Engineering and Land Surveying Courses. The department offers courses which are aligned to the Agenda 4 Initiative such as affordable housing. In 2016, the department received various state-of- the- art training machines and equipment from the Ministry of Education. Our highly qualified trainers accredited with the sector regulator TVETA, government fee capitation policy and HELB Bursary has enabled the institution to produce graduates that are job creators not job seekers. Consequently, the intervention by government have reduced the burden of fee payment on the parents, guardians and sponsors.

Achievements, Goals & Plans for moving to the next level

  • The department has churned out many highly skilled middle level personnel in Building, Civil Engineering and Land Surveying areas of specialization.
  • Most of our Building and Civil Engineering graduates have played pivotal roles in numerous Road Construction and Building Projects across Siaya County and beyond.
  • Many public and private Land Surveying offices in Nyanza and Western regions are staffed by our land surveying graduates who are reportedly doing a wonderful job.
  • In an effort to collaborate with industry stakeholders, the department has interacted with the following agencies/companies:
    • National Construction Authority (NCA)
    • Basco Paints Limited.
    • Crown Paints Limited.
    • East African Portland Cement Company Limited
    • Kisumu Concrete and Products Limited
  • The SIT Institutional Management training Kitchen Block was constructed by our trainees under the supervision of trainers.
  • Deliberate attempts have been undertaken by career guidance and counselling section of the department to mentor trainees by way of delivering motivational talks to them and inviting industry regulators (NCA), to deliver exit talks to final year trainees.
  • Trainees proceeding for industrial attachment are usually assisted to secure relevant places.
  • Positive feedback has been received from attachment places and employees about exemplary performance of our trainees and graduates.
