Road Safety Mainstreaming Sensitization

Road Safety Sensitization for

Boda Boda Riders

On the 18th of March 2023, a road safety mainstreaming sensitization was held at Siaya Institute of Technology. The agenda was to sensitize the local boda boda riders on road safety as well as safe motorbike riding skills. The event was organized by the Siaya Institute of Technology in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Boda boda riders are a popular mode of transport in both urban and rural areas. However, their recklessness on the road has led to an increase in road accidents, which has become a major concern for the government, community and other stakeholders.

The sensitization event was attended by over 30 boda boda riders from the Siaya town area. The program kicked off with a presentation from a road safety expert and Mechanical Engineering HOD, Mr. Eddy Simiyu, who highlighted the importance of road safety and safe riding practices. Mr. Simiyu emphasized the need for riders to wear helmets, follow traffic rules and regulations, and to avoid overloading their bikes.

The riders were also taught how to perform basic motorcycle maintenance, such as checking tire pressure, brake pads, and chain tension. This information was crucial as many boda boda riders in the region lack the technical knowledge to maintain their motorcycles, which can lead to accidents.

The event also included a practical training session where the riders were taken through a course designed to simulate real-life scenarios on the road. The riders were taught how to navigate through different obstacles, such as potholes, bumps, and sharp corners. This training aimed to improve the riders’ reflexes and overall riding skills, which are critical in avoiding accidents.

During the event, the riders were encouraged to form self-help groups, which would enable them to pool resources and contribute towards acquiring insurance covers and rider licenses. The insurance cover would provide the riders with financial protection in the event of an accident, which is a common occurrence among boda boda riders.

The sensitization event was a success, and the boda boda riders left with valuable knowledge on road safety and safe riding practices. The event is part of the Siaya Institute of Technology’s efforts to reduce road accidents in the region and improve the safety of all road users.

“In conclusion, road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the sensitization event held at Siaya Institute of Technology is a step in the right direction towards creating a safer road environment for all. It is essential for all road users to observe traffic rules and regulations, and to prioritize safety at all times.” noted Mr. Simiyu.
